I started Karen Miller Writes for two reasons:
- I want to help people communicate more effectively.
- I reject the idea that writing isn’t valuable.
When I set out to become a freelance copywriter, I took advantage of every gig that came my way. I wrote all kinds of copy including blogs, social media profiles, product descriptions, newsletters and entire websites from scratch. I was pitching and writing every single day.
Fortunately, I was able to get freelance work, which can be challenging for a newcomer. I received positive feedback and a steady stream of assignments. Over several months, I built my portfolio and realized that I have the drive to be a highly prolific copywriter. I learned that quality copywriting is absolutely essential to a successful business marketing strategy.
I continued to write constantly and focused on building my network, but after countless low-paying gigs, I had to be honest with myself. I was writing thousands of words a day for companies that would drop me in a heartbeat if I requested a fair wage. I knew that I would never be happy if I continued to be involved in systems designed to devalue skilled copywriters and the important work they contribute to business.
Copywriters offer a service that adds incredible value to businesses and brands. It’s writers who capture compelling narratives and translate vague ideas into relatable content that leads to conversions. The return on investment for companies is real.
And yet online marketplaces, content mills and businesses who haven’t set aside realistic budgets for marketing efforts continue to drive down rates.
Writing is a skill that needs to be cultivated. An effective writing practice requires technique, style and consistency. It takes years to develop a strong writing voice and even longer to adapt that voice for different objectives.
As a freelance copywriter, I knew I needed to demand more for my time, talent and hard work, so I decided to start this one-person business so that I could offer big solutions in a small package.
After I started viewing myself as a business owner, selling my writing, rather than a desperate freelancer who’ll settle for any gig I could get, I became more available for clients who are eager to invest in the value of my services.
It’s important to recognize that while there are a lot of amateur writers out there, few actually have the strategic skillset and insight needed to create customized and unique content for businesses.
The shift in my mindset helped me clarify my core values as a copywriter and solopreneur. Karen Miller Writes is based on the beliefs that:
- Writing is valuable.
- Writing is one of the most important skills in business.
- Writing is at the root of every marketing and advertising effort.
We are living in a period of over saturation. There’s a lot of information out there about content marketing, SEO and strategy. It can be hard to discern what is worth paying attention to and what to invest in.
As a highly-skilled copywriter, I can help you strategize. Over time, customized copywriting services can help you build brand loyalty. We will start with your most valuable marketing tool– your website. From there, we will create cohesion across all of your digital marketing platforms to reach your customers with fresh content posted on a regular basis.
I predict that future success (and profit) will belong to business owners who invest in quality content writing as the foundation of their business marketing plan.
